Pokémon TCG: Pitch Black — Mega Darkrai ex Arrives in July
The fifth Mega Evolution set brings Darkrai into the spotlight on July 17, 2026. Here's everything confirmed so far — and what collectors should keep in mind.

The Pitch-Black Pokémon Gets Its Moment#
Before Chaos Rising has even hit shelves, the next set has already been announced. Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution — Pitch Black is confirmed as the fifth main English set in the Mega Evolution series, releasing on July 17, 2026. Prerelease events run from July 4–12 at participating Play! Pokémon stores.
The name is a direct reference to Darkrai's official lore designation — it is literally called the "Pitch-Black Pokémon." It fits, and it sets up what should be one of the more atmospheric sets in the current block.
What We Know So Far#
Pitch Black carries the set code ME05 and is based on Japan's Abyss Eye expansion, which releases in Japan on May 22, 2026 — the same day as our Chaos Rising. Because there are no Japanese subsets currently supplementing the main sets, Pitch Black will follow the same pattern as Perfect Order, Chaos Rising, and Phantasmal Flames before it: a near 1:1 adaptation of its Japanese source, which means another smaller English set.
The confirmed headline: Mega Darkrai ex is the cover Pokémon and main chase card of the set.
Beyond that, the card list has not been officially revealed as of this writing. Japan's Abyss Eye had not yet shown its cards publicly at the time of Pitch Black's announcement — an unusual situation that the community noticed. The full picture will become clearer as Abyss Eye previews roll out in Japan ahead of its May release.
Why Darkrai Matters for Collectors#
Mega Darkrai ex is the first Dark-type Mega Evolution Pokémon ex in the current series since Mega Gengar ex appeared in Phantasmal Flames — the first set of the block. That precedent is worth paying attention to: Mega Gengar ex's Mega Hyper Rare has been among the most valuable cards in the entire Mega Evolution era, currently trading at significant premiums on the secondary market.
Darkrai has its own collector following independent of the current set cycle. It's a Mythical Pokémon with a recognisable silhouette, a distinctive aesthetic, and an established history in the TCG that goes back to the Diamond and Pearl era. It also connects directly to the Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC, which is the thematic backbone of this entire Mega Evolution block — giving Mega Darkrai ex a narrative reason to exist here beyond just being a fan favourite.
For collectors who track the Mega Evolution series as a thematic whole, Pitch Black completes something: the block now has a Mythical Darkness-type bookending its run, echoing Mega Gengar ex from the start. Whether that narrative coherence translates to secondary market value is speculative, but it's a real factor for set collectors who think in those terms.
The Small Set Pattern — Again#
It's worth being honest about what "near 1:1 adaptation of a single Japanese source" means in practice. Phantasmal Flames, Perfect Order, and Chaos Rising have all been smaller sets because of this structure — fewer cards overall, which concentrates the chase slots but also means less variety per box. Pitch Black is expected to follow the same template.
This has a real impact on how you approach the set as a collector:
- Fewer total cards means the pull rate math is relatively friendlier for any individual chase slot
- Fewer hits overall means a single box gives you less variety than a larger set would
- The Mega Hyper Rare tier — the gold-textured ultra-premium introduced with this block — will almost certainly be Mega Darkrai ex, and based on what Mega Gengar ex established, it will be among the hardest and most expensive pulls in the set
If you're primarily a player, smaller sets have generally been fine for the Mega Evolution block — competitive staples tend to concentrate in the ex and full-art tiers, and those pull rates haven't been punishing by modern standards.
What's Still Unknown#
At this point, the honest answer is: most of it. Because Abyss Eye hadn't revealed its cards at the time Pitch Black was announced, the full card list, the SIR lineup, Trainer card details, and any confirmed secondary Mega Evolution Pokémon are all still unknown.
What is confirmed:
- Set name: Mega Evolution — Pitch Black (ME05)
- Release date: July 17, 2026
- Prerelease window: July 4–12, 2026
- Source set: Japan's Abyss Eye (May 22, 2026)
- Cover Pokémon: Mega Darkrai ex
- Set size: Expected to be small, consistent with recent Mega Evolution English sets
Previews from Abyss Eye will be the thing to watch in the weeks after Chaos Rising launches. Japanese card reveals typically land several weeks before the English set release, which would put the main Pitch Black spoiler season in late May to early June.
Should You Pay Attention Now?#
If you're a collector who plans purchases rather than reacting to launch day hype, yes — knowing Pitch Black is coming in July is useful context. The Mega Darkrai ex angle gives the set a clear identity even before the full card list is known, and the Mega Gengar ex precedent from Phantasmal Flames gives you a reference point for what a Darkness-type Mega Hyper Rare can do on the secondary market.
That said, there's genuinely not much to act on yet. The responsible thing is to wait for Abyss Eye previews, watch how Chaos Rising's secondary market settles in the weeks after May 22, and make decisions from there.
We'll update our coverage as the Pitch Black card list is confirmed.
Pitch Black releases July 17, 2026. Prerelease events run July 4–12 at participating stores. All set details are based on confirmed announcements as of April 2026 — full card reveals are pending.
